Thank heaven for Instagram stories, especially during fashion week – how else would you see what’s going on halfway around the world just as soon as it happens? Case in point: I got the surprise of my life while watching Paris Fashion Week stories yesterday when I scrolled into a Cape Town-based art director’s story. He was in the audience at this year’s Design Indaba watching a presentation, and there, live on the screen, was the face of Virgil Abloh.
A lucky group of Design Indaba attendees got the sneak peek of a lifetime when Architect Dong-Ping Wong facetimed his famous friend during his presentation. While we have no doubt that his talk was engaging (Wong is the founder and director of FOOD, an incredible design firm in New York that has worked on some Off-White™ stores), we’re freaking out over Abloh’s casual reveal.
What started out as a short conversation about design theory turned into Abloh giving the audience a tour of his studio and then actually showing them pieces from the AW19 collection being sent down the runway tonight at Paris Fashion Week. That’s a public preview more than 24 hours before the collection was due to debut! You’re about to see it too, a couple of hours before Paris does, because we got screenshots.
Virgil even gave them a look at some last minute additions to the collection – this yellow dress (among other last minute dresses that were still lying flat on the cutting table), and a pair of checkered boots, still being finished.
I know – we can’t believe it either. It’s exactly the kind of spontaneity we’ve come to expect from Virgil Abloh, fashion’s favourite rule breaker. We just never thought it would happen in our own backyard!
Thoughts on the collection?
